Aqeel Panaruna

Aqeel Panaruna is a third-generation businessman from the distinguished Anaikar family of Ambur, in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. With 40 years of experience, he hails from a family renowned as pioneers in the Indian leather exports business since the early seventies.

In 1984, after completing his Business Management studies at the Loyola College, Chennai, Aqeel joined the family business established by his grandfather. In 1995, he founded Florence Shoe Company Pvt Ltd, which has become a marquee name in the leather and footwear industry and a leading exporter to international brands.

As Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports, Aqeel has provided key inputs for the development of a robust Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) that has significantly boosted industry exports. He has represented the industry at various national and international forums, advocating for its interests through numerous organisations and institutions. His international missions have showcased the capabilities of the Indian leather industry, attracting foreign industries to set up manufacturing units in India.

Aqeel’s primary focus has been fostering the growth of the MSME segment in India. He has been instrumental in empowering women in the leather sector, creating employment opportunities that have enhanced livelihoods in rural areas. As Chairman of the Leather Sector Skill Council, he has led initiatives to skill youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, creating a skilled workforce for the industry.

Committed to sustainable business practices and environmental preservation, Aqeel has collaborated with the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to implement waste treatment technology. This ensures zero liquid discharge and prevents environmental pollution, promoting a sustainable future for the Indian leather industry.

Leadership
